D-One class in Volvo Gdynia Sailing Days

Devoti One boats took part in Volvo Gdynia Sailing Days on 20-21st of July. During those two days, the weather thoroughly verified competitors’ skills with a strong gusts of wind that made races even harder. Close proximity to the shore and nearby cliffs made the wind change its direction quite often, which left some less concentrated sailors very surprised. Despite that, D-One's were performing marvelously in such conditions, especially when driven by an expierenced hand.
Saturday races were plenty of spectacular overturns, which pleased lots of tourists on nearby beaches but surely not the wet sailors. High waves did not spare anyone. “I was really nervous when I was leaving port, wind was blowing from my back and there were yachts sailing to and from the port right next to me.” - Dorota Dajkowska recalls - „First capsize happened to me just 10 meters after I left the port, but I managed to bring boat back and check in at the starting line in time.”
For Wlodek Radwaniecki it was his first time on D-One and he still managed to take third place in great style.  „Much respect for Wlodek, he played out windward courses very well.”  - praises his colleague Michal Korneszczuk and comments further  – „The first races weren’t so successful for me, but the more I sailed the better I was performing. Overall conditions were very hard and required lots of physical fitness and mental toughness.”
Sunday spared our sailors a bit, mostly due to much smaller waves, but wind remained strong and changed directions throughout all races.  All of that made Sunday’s competition still as exciting as the day before, and with less capsizes happening, we saw more close racing. The fight between Michal Korneszczuk and Piotr Machel for the first place continued until the very end, ultimately won by Michal with 9 points on his account. „I have managed to win mostly because of me being more experienced with this boat.” –  he says.

1st Polish D-One Championships - NordCup 2013

For the first time Nord Cup regatta welcomed Devoti-One class and it wasn’t the last one for sure! On 7th of July event has ended and brought a conclusion to the first Polish Championships in D-One class. Six boats took part, one of which was driven by Piotr Kula – numerous Polish Champion in Finn class and participant in London’s Summer Olympics in 2012.
On firday sailors took part in nearly 3 hour long training, very useful for those who started on D-One for the first time. Piotr Kula surprised everyone with his good results, he effectively used his rich experience and the fact that he usually sails on Finn weren’t a problem for him at all. “It was a very good sailing, I enjoyed it very much. However the advantage I’ve worked out on windward courses was lost whenever we entered courses downwind due to my lack of experience with genaker” – Piotr mentions  – „I will for sure start again on D-One.”
As we all know, sailing on D-One is connected to capsizing, which didn’t spare Nord Cup’s participants. Marcin Rymer from YKP Gdynia, former 49er sailor, capsized during an important struggle with Piotr Kula for leading position. After first day he was classified 2nd, just behind Piotr Kula who had the same number of points but better race balance. Marcin proved his worth during second day, on which he won all two races.“I’ve beat everyone with my experience with genaker a correct sailing on downwind courses.” – Marcin relates – „Sometimes I was able to gain leading position from 3rd or 4th place on 1st mark!
Piotr Machel, the one who during entire regatta was ‘occupying’ 3rd place, praised Piotr Kula and sport rivalry between them that took place during several races. „I had just a tiny bit more experience in using genaker – that opened a possibility for an even fight with Piotrek.” – Piotr Machel mentions – „I wish him good luck and I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed during Finn European Championships for him!”
Vladislav Ptasnik from Czech Republic ended up 4th, just behind the podium. It was his first time on Nord Cup, but not the first in Polish regatta’s, as he quite often sails on catamarans in Sopot. He’s a veteran D-One sailor that treated this event more like an extra training, especially when it comes to sea waves and how to sail with and against them.
Results after 1st day (4 races):
  1. Piotr Kula                                                   4 Pkt
  2. Marcin Rymer, YKP Gdynia                        4 Pkt
  3. Piotr Machel                                             10 Pkt
